Description

Here's my first commissioned oneshot map, requested by Scrapknight-507. It's a world originally made for a nation role-playing game he ran. The text that follows is mostly his. It's an interesting world and it was a joy to work on it. If you're interested in commissioning your own piece, see this for details.

---

This is a dieselpunk and pulpy world, with culture still having a 40s aesthetic and feel even if the mechanics and underlying values have obviously evolved. German and Japanese wunderwaffen, such as mecha, Iron Man-type suits, rocket aircraft, giant tanks, Tesla coils, etc. During WWII, the first notable PoD is that wunderwaffen allowed the Japanese to occupy Hawaii for just under a year, and the Germans are also feel confident enough to at least attempt Sealion; however, the invasion doesn’t succeed. Though the Americans fail to land in Italy successfully in ‘43, averting total puppetization by the Germans in the process, things start getting better by 1944 as the Americans catch up on wunderwaffen and their production gets into gear. D-Day does succeed, but more notably, so does Operation Valkyrie, and Hitler and the SS are ousted by the Wehrmacht, which makes peace with the Allies, who are in turn worried that the Germans might pull more wunderwaffen out of the air. France and the Low Countries are liberated, but the rest of Europe is still under Axis control. The Soviets generally haven’t been doing very well, and when there are rumors of a coup to oust Stalin to get the war to stop, he makes peace with the Germans. Germany annexes the Baltics and establishes very nasty puppet states in Ukraine and Belarus. The Wehrmacht may not be genocidal but the Eastern European puppets are still basically giant plantation economies to be exploited by Germany.

Japan does quite a bit better against the Americans and is even able to invade Australia, but this did not save them. Americans get the “void bomb," a form of antimatter weaponry. In this timeline, people believed nukes would set the atmosphere on fire, but evidently had no problems with antimatter weapons. The Americans develop the void bomb just a few months before the Japanese, and drop it on Hiroshima. Seeing what happened to the Germans, the Japanese offer surrender in exchange for keeping Taiwan and the Emperor. The Soviets occupied Manchuria and met American troops on the Yalu. The Japanese military regime falls in the mid-50s, since there isn’t another Axis state east of India and it was exceedingly unpopular, and today is democratic and solidly in the American bloc. Nationalist China managed to defeat the CCP with a lot of American support, and unified the country barring Soviet-occupied Manchuria. China is richer than the OTL PRC and more democratic; Chiang died during WWII and under Wang Jingwei, the KMT became a broad-tent center-left party that dominates Chinese politics the way the LDP dominates OTL Japanese politics. They’re the Americans’ most reliable partners in the Cold War, as Britain is more conservative than them and France sometimes gets nervous about the Wehrmacht next door.

After all this, a cold war ensues between the Americans, British, French and the Republic of China on one side and the German-Italian axis on the other. The Axis dominates Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, and also count Azad Hind / India under S.C. Bose and Integralist Brazil as allies. The Soviets are notionally on the side of the United Nations, here halfway between NATO and the OTL UN for the Allied bloc, but went from nearly going to war with the Allies in China under Stalin to being their own power bloc under Molotov and Beria to active cooperation with the UN starting in the 80s.

There are also some rogue states. This being a pulpy world, the Nazis of course fled to Antarctica, where they managed to build a semi-functional state on the backs of kidnapped, clone and slave labor. They also have wacky DPRK stuff going on; Himmler is the “Eternal Fuhrer,” while Hitler is worshipped as a literal god of the German people, and all subsequent Fuhrers of the Antarctic Reich have been part of the Himmler dynasty. It is, of course, armed to the teeth with void bombs, and while both the Axis and the UN hate it, the Axis has occasionally meddled with UN efforts to actually wipe it out. Another rogue state is the Manchurian Soviet Republic, which is part North Korea writ large, part United Soviet Republics of China and Manchuria from An Examination of Extra-Universal Systems of Government. It’s less cloistered and batshit crazy than the DPRK we know and “love," but has a lot more monarchical elements, complete with God-Emperor Mao and neo-feudalism. The USSR used to back them up, but after the Sino-Soviet Split in the 70s the Manchurians are basically on their own. They don’t formally cooperate with the Nazis, but they do sometimes clandestinely support each other as a means of causing mayhem. Finally, Peru was taken over by essentially an ersatz-Yuri from Red Alert 2 in 2002, who stole psychic technology from the Nazis and set himself up as Emperor of the “People’s Empire of Peru.” They’re completely insane and are basically quarantined from the international system. Their Psychic Dominators aren’t as powerful as they are in the game, but since this world doesn’t have ICBMs nobody’s quite sure what to do about them. They’re in no position to take over the world.

The first Cold War ended in 2003 in what would be called the “Seven Months War”. The Antarctic Reich perfected essentially Chronosphere technology. They only had one shot, with a Sino-American invasion force bearing down on them, so they invaded Germany and tried to build their Fourth Reich. They brought enough void bombs, which they used indiscriminately, to take a lot of territory, but they just didn’t have the manpower, and the UN and Italians cooperated to restore order. The Nazis also void bombed Los Angeles during the Seven Months War in a fit of pique. They almost destroyed New York but for their bomb being a dud. In the aftermath, some land was returned to Poland and the Czechs became independent. In Germany proper, the south was placed under the Italo-fascist South German Confederation, while the northern government was stocked with reformist members of the Wehrmacht’s pet DNVP. The “United States of Germany” has a veneer of democracy, but is really more technocratic, and is big and industrialized enough to still exert influence over Germany’s traditional sphere in places like Ukraine and Slovakia. The Nazis, for their part, regrouped in South Africa, which they run from behind the scenes through the organization PHOENIX. South Africa is still an apartheid state that’s becoming even worse under Nazi influence, and has its own ring of puppets in Angola, Mozambique and Rhodesia.

The UN has won the Cold War, but it isn’t as dominant as the OTL US. The US is more progressive than OTL, given both the Cold War with the fascists and a persistent problem with white nationalist terrorism[2]. While the Soviets have actually mostly democratized under Gorbachev[3], they actually are more active than ever about gaining influence worldwide, and are no longer Sino-American quasi-puppets as they once were. Britain is quite neo-imperialist, though democratic, and almost got into a war with China over Hong Kong, so they’re still troublesome. Italy leads what remains of the opposition to the UN the fascist "Independence League." India and Brazil are in an “always tomorrow’s superpower” mode, but remain fascist. There are also the Italian puppets, which include Spain[4], South Germany and most of the Balkans. Then there are a few odds and ends. The Non-Aligned Movement is made up primarily of the Congo, New Zealand, and Indonesia, and is weaker than OTL's. The Congo, which is actually more stable sans its resource-rich areas, is a big member. Objectivist-nationalist Indonesia is one of the major powers in the Non-Aligned Movement. Suharto had Taggart Industries-sponsored economic advisers, which has led to friction with the UN but has also led to Indonesia's current prosperity. Carved out of Colombia is the Free State of Antioquia, which is theoretically an anarcho-capitalist filibusterer state started by Ayn Rand’s Taggart Corporation, but is practically dominated by Pablo Escobar and the drug cartels. Of course, sometimes the lines blur. They aren't internationally recognized by any great powers, or indeed any smaller powers except the most desperate for cash. They mainly survive by buying off the Colombian government with their drug money and serving as a hub for criminal organizations the world over, who meddle as best they can to keep the law out[5]. The whole fundamentalist objectivist thing is a good cover story for buying and selling all manner of illegal things, so organized crime worldwide finds it useful. And, of course, it's a useful place to launder money and weapons for the Nazis and other rogue states.

[1] Think HYDRA.
[2] Some homegrown, some sponsored by the Nazis.
[3] Yeltsin currently runs the place, elected as the candidate of the People’s Socialist Party.
[4] As insane as it sounds, the Spanish tried to bring back Juan Carlos II in the late 90s who managed to run the country so badly he triggered a second civil war that put the fascists back in power.
[5] The OSS has been playing whack-a-mole with Antioquian thugs and front groups for nigh on thirty years.

Yes, Peru is terrible, but what Ecuador has pulled on the Peruvian refugees is an obvious abuse of human rights.
