The David of Schleswig

Description

An old one that's been on the backburner for a long time. It's part of an early series outlining what would happen if the other guy won a historic war. I have to say, I can't speak for the plausibility, 19th century Europe not being my forte.

---

It appears that in this world, Frederick III elected not to marry Princess Victoria, daughter of the British Queen Victoria, in 1858. As a consequence, Queen Victoria was influenced by Alexandra of Denmark to side with the Danes during the Second Schleswig War in 1864. The Prussians are defeated, Bismarck is ousted, and Frederick III placed in full control. Frederick III, who now marries Princess Victoria, gradually transforms the Prussian Kingdom, later the German Empire, into a liberal, pro-British constitutional monarchy.

This Anglo-German Alliance has prompted the other continental powers of Europe to forge a counterbalancing alliance, not unlike the Central Powers and Entente of our history. This Entente is composed of France, Austria-Hungary and Russia, three powers that have much to fear from an Anglo-German alliance. The Ottomans and Italians have joined the Anglo-Germans, and while this has caused trouble in the Balkans it is amazing that these great powers have not gone to war yet. Maybe we found one of the lucky timelines.

Domestically, Britain is more or less a continuation of its late 19th century self, while the Germans are far less militaristic than any in our history pre-1945. Still far more conservative than our Federal Republic, though. The French have taken a turn to the authoritarian, perhaps due to the influence of their Austrian and Russian allies. Speaking of the Austrians and Russians, they're having more than a few problems with nationalist unrest. We need to keep an eye on that.

There is violence between the pro-British Japanese and the pro-French Chinese, who appear to be led by the descendants of the Taiping Rebellion's leadership. These guys give Mao a run for his money. The United States remains neutral, as do the Dutch, and both are very similar to our versions, pre-WWI. Isolation is particularly strong in the United States. Then there's the Union of Latin Communes. Jeez, I thought the Provisionals were hardcore reds.

Weapons and medicinal development is rather behind our 1940s, with tanks, nuclear weapons and artificial gravity all remaining theoretical. Small arms and artillery are well-developed, but nothing we could find useful. It looks like another dud with regard to any good tech, but who knows, maybe they've figured out a more efficient internal combustion engine design that people in the Third World might be interested in.

So, who is the David in the David of Schleswig? One of the monarchs of the German Empire?
