My cover of Jcw3's quick map showing his take on HBO's Confederate. Basically, the idea is that the Confederacy's economic and political situation means that it's easy pickings in a rematch, and was only kept independent because it was too much trouble to reintegrate. It manages to collapse anyway. I decided to extrapolate on this a bit by having an Anglo-American cold war be the primary conflict. In retaliation for tacit British support of the Confederacy, the Americans go to war with Britain sometime after the First Civil War, managing to take British Columbia, leading to continued rivalry between the two states. After the Confederacy's defeat in the Second Civil War (1913-1916), the British were concerned that America would be the ones to topple them from their place. Britain abandoned splendid isolation, deciding to forge an alliance with the rising Germany and Russia, in an attempt to create a pan-European alliance to eventually challenge the United States. This led to resurgent, neo-Napoleonic France feeling like the British were isolating it, and led eventually to a preemptive strike by France against Germany. Unfortunately, being expansionist dicks did not endear them to America, either, so the UK and US did work together against France during the Great War (1933-1939). However, their rivalry quickly resumed and continued well into the 21st century. The Russians eventually broke off from Britain over disputes in Persia and Central Asia. China imploded much later, leading to the British supporting the Qing and the Americans supporting the Republic of China, which led to three wars between the two Chinas (1950-1954, 1972-1976, and 2035-Present). India throws off the British in a violent revolution in the 1960s, ending in a patchwork subcontinent that is still fraught with ethnic tensions. In the 21st century, the Confederacy collapses, Canada is integrated into the United States, and the North American Community forms, reheating the cold war. China is now under threat from the new Peasant's Republic, which has mixed a strange, apocalyptic Buddhism with communism to create a vicious army that's set on creating a new Chinese state for the Chinese people.

Neither of the superpowers are particularly dystopian at home; the Americans are more left-wing and friendlier to socialism than OTL, but are more militaristic and interventionist, while the British are more conservative and hostile to socialism (the two parties are Conservative and Liberal; no Labour), but they maintain their constitutional monarchy. The British are pretty nasty in Africa, though, resorting to unlimited drone warfare to keep their colonies in line. Russia and Germany are also constitutional monarchies, but Japan is rather *fascist in its ostensibly democratic politics. India is very strongly Hindu nationalist, and while nominally a democracy, the same party has won every election since independence.

Curious what the tech level is. Comparable to OTL present?
