The clone armies of the Federal Star Fleet Army are varied in their composition. While the vast majority of Federal troopers are servitors, born and bred for war, the servitors' lack of complex cognition makes them useful for little more than cannon fodder. To remedy this, the Federation mixes their forces with large numbers of redshirts, the clone core of all of Federal society. The Star Fleet Army routinely recruits young redshirts into their forces, training them for ten years in the art of war before their first deployment. Although a lengthy process on paper, the Star Fleet Army has trillions of redshirts it can call upon to fight any given engagement, so the life of the individual redshirt is as meaningless to the Federation's leadership as any other redshirt.
Referred to as troopers, redshirts in the Star Fleet Army are more well-equipped than their servitor counterparts. Their trademark red jumpsuits are made out of a composite polymer that renders them bulletproof to kalashes, while their body armor can take at least one direct hit from a KF7 Imperial blaster. Troopers are expected to shoot first and be able to hit their enemy from longer ranges, so heavy armor is deemed unnecessary. Further, troopers also keep much of their faces exposed, an attempt by the Federation to make their soldiers look more human and kind than their Imperial rivals. The lack of a face-concealing helmet also makes aiming easier. While effective against most engagements, the troopers' light armor has been a source of derision among those outside of the Unity Party's control. A common joke is that, if an Imperial stormtrooper and Federation redshirt got into a fight, the stormtrooper would miss every shot but the redshirt would die anyway.
This trooper is armed with a standard-issue Type-38 phaser rifle. The Type-38 is the latest phaser rifle in the Federal arsenal, and it is highly customizable. Some have improved optics for sniping, others can have a drum of extra ionizing gas attached to the bottom so the rifle can provide suppressing fire. In its standard configuration, the Type-38 is a semi-automatic battle rifle, one that regularly outranges its Imperial counterpart, the KF7. The main drawback to the Type-38 is its fragility; the weapon's complex targeting and ionizing systems do not cope well with dirt, and the targeting systems can often move out of alignment if the weapon is hit hard enough.
