Pem-wing Gunship

Description

One of the enduring symbols of the Arambi War, and one of the most important assets of the Imperial Army, the humble Pem-wing gunship is a simple VTOL transport shuttle that has become armed to the teeth. Little more than a glorified, environmentally-sealed repulsor engine, the Pem-wing has nevertheless changed the face of the Imperial Army and made the Arambi War winnable planetside.

Unlike many aerospace craft in the Imperial Army's arsenal, the Pem-wing was commissioned by the Imperial Army, and not a Navy hand-me-down. For this reason, all Pem-wings are painted white, to reflect their Army origins and ownership. The Pem-wing was commissioned because the Army had a specific need in the Arambi War for a shuttle that could land in small jungle clearings. Many stormtroopers were being injured deep in the jungle and needed immediate evac, while other times Arambi Liberation Front troops would melt into the jungle and the Imperials could not catch them on foot. The Army had plenty of large, former Navy shuttles for transporting troops and material between orbit and planetside, but these monstrosities would never be able to land in the dense jungle. Taking from civilian yacht designs, the Imperial forges designed the Pem-wing.

The Pem-wing is a simple design: it is a sealed durasteel box, with a large repulsor engine on one end and a cockpit on the other, and two large radiator wings. Beneath the cockpit is a ball gun armed with two heavy blasters, a last-minute addition by the designers after the Army rejected the original design for being completely unarmed. The ad-hoc nature of the ball gun turret is evident in the final design; the gunner has to enter through the cockpit, and only if the ball gun turret is turned to a specific position while the Pem-wing is in flight. The repulsor engine on the Pem-wing is powerful for an aerospace craft its size, as the Army specifically requested that the Pem-wing be able to circumnavigate a standard terrestrial world within an hour. The custom-designed repulsor engine makes a loud thumping sound, unique to the triple-cycle repulsor used on the Pem-wing. This means that a Pem-wing can be heard for kilometers around, a source of great joy for Imperial troops and dread for their arambi enemies. The sound of the Pem-wing has become a major part of its image.

The Pem-wing has two massive radiator wings, which fold during landing to save space. The radiator wings are necessary to keep the Pem-wing cool, even in atmosphere. The hull of the Pem-wing has two large, retractable doors and one door on the left side for the flight crew. The large doors can open and shut quickly, so troops can embark or disembark en masse and without hassle. To supplement the Pem-wing's firepower, stormtroopers often keep the doors open during flight, and mount repeating blasters on the sides of the doors. Stormtroopers riding in the Pem-wing are also encouraged to use their small arms when flying over a hostile arambi village.

The Army quickly fell in love with the Pem-wing, as it gave the Army mobility it never had without Navy support. Many variants were created: medivac shuttles and dedicated close air support units, just to name two. The Army developed many different tactics with the Pem-wing, such as flying in against the sun to take advantage of the ALF's general reliance on eyesight to target enemy aircraft, and even blasting music from onboard speakers to disorient and confuse the enemy. Use of the Pem-wing quickly spread to other Imperial fronts, where it proved an effective addition to the local arsenal. Billions of Pem-wings have been manufactured, and billions more have been ordered by the Army.

In all seriousness, I love how visible all the influences are on this, moreso even than in other certain works. Reminds me a lot of the shuttles used by the Eternal Empire in that Old Republic DLC.
