Description

Based on Ephraim Ben Raphael's The Falcon Cannot Hear, but not an alternate of that timeline specifically. His timeline isn't as dodgy with history as this one will be, as the map itself is actually based on one of my earliest maps, made back in 2008 from the Wikipedia basemap.

The Stock Market Crash of 1929 brought the entire global economy crashing down. With it, the sociopolitical order that had been established by the Great War was severely threatened. In Italy and Germany, fascist parties took control of their countries and openly denounced the Anglo-French order that dominated Europe. In the East, the Soviet Union funded communist revolution in China, a war which drew in Japan and transformed China into a Soviet-Japanese proxy war. And in the United States, the seeds of discontent were sowed as it became increasingly clear that the government was unable, or unwilling, to help.

In 1936, many impoverished and angry citizens established a blockade around Washington, D.C. Calling themselves the "Second Bonus Army," named after the "army" of Great War veterans that staged a similar protest in 1932, the Second Bonus Army demanded more government action to mitigate the effects of the Depression, actions that President Garner was unwilling to take. Fearing the possibility of a communist revolution fermenting among the ranks of the Second Bonus Army, Garner ordered the United States Army to break up the protests. This led to an armed confrontation, as the Second Bonus Army had anticipated violent reaction. While the Second Bonus Army was eventually defeated, Washington D.C. was burned to the ground. President Garner was nowhere to be found. After the chaos, a military government under General McArthur was established, to last until "order was restored."

This move, seen as profoundly anti-democratic, motivated many groups on the left and the right to take up arms. At the forefront were the Communist Party of the United States, the membership of which grew throughout the Depression, and the supporters of Huey Long. who had united various right-wing groups around the country and operated from the South. McArthur's government initially had the upper hand, but after the death of McArthur in 1940, his military government crumbled. Much of McArthur's faction joined Huey Long. In the meanwhile, support for the two warring factions poured in from outside: the Germans and Italians supported Long, while the Soviets supported the communists. Wary of both, the British and French declined to support either side, instead securing Canada and the peripheries of the United States. In Europe, a brief war between France and Germany ended in the latter's victory, and the humiliation of the British Expeditionary Force at Dunkirk forced a peace agreement in Germany's favor.

The Second American Civil War ended in 1945, in a division that the first American Civil War was fought to prevent. The communists, as part of the United Socialist States of America, took control of the North, while Long's rump United States took control of the South. A few American remnants continue to exist in Cuba and Hawaii, backed by the UK, but their claims to the mainland are laughable. The development of nuclear weapons, and Germany's use of it against the BEF, has locked this conflict and the general conflict between democracy, communism and fascism.

In 2008, the Cold War continues with no sign of ending. The autocratic regimes in Berlin and Moscow have survived the deaths of Fuhrers and General Secretaries, and their iron grip over their people are as strong as ever. Propaganda from both sides fuels intense hatred for the other, and intense loyalty for the brave men who stand up to the enemies of the proletariat or the Master Race. Both American governments have taken after their masters abroad. In America and Eastern Europe, fascist and communist soldiers watch each other warily. Only the threat of nuclear annihilation prevents these two blocs from annihilating each other.

And in the United Kingdom, the self-proclaimed bastion of democracy, the people fear either a fascist or communist invasion. Not that either the Kriegsmarine or Red Navy have such capability, as both combined are dwarfed by the Royal Navy, but British culture has adopted a very paranoid siege mentality. Even Britain's dominions cling on, for fear of hanging separately if they do not hang together, although political concessions have made home rule the rule, not the exception. Of course, the growing violence between Muslims and Hindus in India, and the British government's waffling stance on that conflict, may threaten the Empire's solidarity.

Is Canada actually fascist or just a right-wing democracy?
