In The Presence of Mine Enemies

Description

Another parallelism experiment, akin to my TL-191 "remake", that instead takes a second look at Turtledove's In the Presence of Mine Enemies. The original story had a lot of ham-fisted parallelism with the Third Reich and OTL's USSR, so I decided to take it further. Many thanks to those who gave me ideas for this, and to SRegan for making the ITPME base map!

  • Roosevelt was assassinated in 1933, leading to America's isolation from WWII and, ultimately, Axis victory. The fact that the Germans developed nukes by 1943 has led to some questions being asked after the fall of the Third Reich, particularly since a lot of advanced nuclear science seemed to appear out of nowhere.
  • The United States was defeated in WWIII, which took place in the late 60s and early 70s. The United States was carved up between Germany and Japan, and its regional allies, Canada and Mexico.
  • The Third Reich naturally collapses into a myriad of different independent states, with the German Federal Republic being the largest and most powerful of them all. This GFR is still massive, spanning from the French border to roughly Brest-Litovsk borders. Naturally, led by a President who was once part of the SS. The GFR recently invaded Denmark, and is intervening on behalf of the government in Tartary.
  • The Japanese Empire liberalized in the 1960s and spun off many of its conquered territories as puppet states, and opted for economy rather than military supremacy in the face of superior German arms. The Japanese Empire is the sole remaining superpower, and was engaged in a war against terrorist communist Slavs in the former German territories in European Russia. Currently intervening on the side of anti-government, anti-Red Army rebels in Tartary.
  • Tartary was invaded by Japan, but after withdrawal the government came under the influence of the Union of Turkestan and the GFR. It is now the base of operation for the New Red Army, a neo-Stalinist organization that seeks to recreate the USSR and expand its influence throughout Eurasia.
  • After years of occupation, China was spun off as an independent republic by the Japanese in the aftermath of WWIII (the Japanese could ill-afford to occupy two massive countries at once). The Chinese remain loyal allies to the Japanese, although they do insist that they are the fathers of Eastern civilization. Ironically, of all the countries in the world, China remains one of Japan's closest allies, the other being the Caucasian Union.
  • The Caucasian Union was a post-Third Reich state that became a quick Japanese ally. The Caucasians are proudly Muslim, and treat their Christian populations rather poorly. This has led to the rise of Christian terrorist/freedom fighter organizations in the country, some of which are ironically funded by the Muslim Union of Turkestan.
  • The Italian Empire is a rising superpower to challenge the Japanese, and is using its oceans of slave labor in Africa and the Middle East to flood the world markets as the workshop of the world. Currently involved in a dispute over authority in Malta, which the British still claim. Italy was once close to Japan, particularly after the Italo-German Split (over the issue of anti-Semitism in fascism and territorial disputes in Tyrolia), but they are growing closer to Germany again. The Italian Empire houses the last Jews in Europe, at least the ones who aren't hiding in the Wehrmacht.
  • Spain is a rising power, and has surprisingly become a tech giant. People say that Spain will be the new global superpower, after the inevitable fall of Japan and Italy. Most of these people speak Spanish.
  • Brazil and South Africa are other rising powers, and with Germany, Italy and Spain form the GIBSS Bloc, which is rising to challenge the Japanese.
  • Britain did not surrender until the very end of the war, when the first two atomic bombs were used against it. Surprisingly, the Germans were keen on rebuilding Britain as part of the New Order, and the post-war British eschewed their democratic past and instead embraced fascism with zeal. They are still like this, even after the fall of the Third Reich. The post-war British economy has been defined by high technology products, for which the British are still famous.
  • France was divided into two zones, the German-occupied north and the "free" south, during WWII. While these were supposed to be united after the war, the Germans opted to keep the French divided, and allowed Vichy France to fall into the Italian sphere of influence after the Italo-German Split. After the fall of the Third Reich, France has reunited.
  • The United States was under German occupation for a long time, and is just now rebuilding. It is now the most powerful economy in North America, and is demanding that its satellites in the Japanese-backed NAU pay their debts.
  • Canada was an American ally for a long time, but turned on the Americans after the Germans seized much of the east and the king threw out the current government. The Canadians are currently suffering from severe economic trouble after years of corrupt government.
  • India was divided in two between the Germans and Japanese. The Japanese-backed Azad Hind (East India) is a flourishing democracy, while the German-backed Aryan Union of India (West India) is one of the few remaining National Socialist states on Earth. West India's form of National Socialism has adopted a lot of Islamic elements, and has even recently repudiated Mein Kampf as being "too soft on the Jewish question."

How much of an issue is the divide between Azeris and North Caucasian Muslims (Chechens, Circassians, and the like) in the Caucasian Union?
