Alliance TS-1 Maverick Starfighter

Description

The premier aerospace superiority fighter of the Citizens' Alliance after the Great Star War, the TS-1 Maverick is perhaps one of the best examples of Alliance aerospace doctrine. Manufactured by Reia Aerospace, one of the premier military contractors within the entire Citizens' Alliance, each TS-1 costs as much as a hundred Tesh-wing interceptors. This hefty price tag pays for an onboard jump drive, the finest inertial dampeners and life support systems in a modern starfighter, and advanced avionics that skirt the limits of the Uniform Machine Code.

The Maverick is crewed by two human pilots; one to maneuver the craft, the other to operate weapons systems and operate the jump drive. The twin impulse engines on the Maverick are powerful, capable of accelerating the fighter to one percent the speed of light in mere hours. To accommodate for this thrust, the cockpit is outfitted with advanced inertial dampeners and antigravity plating, and crews wear powered armor designed specifically to withstand the tremendous g-forces they would be subjected to in combat. Even then, pilots must be exceptionally fit in order to stay in combat without blacking out. While accommodating two pilots is extremely costly, the benefits are clear: the Maverick has maneuverability comparable to a drone, but has the initiative, creativity and skill that only sapient pilots can bring to the battlefield.

The Maverick is expected to perform a multitude of tasks in the battlefield. It must be able to pick off drones without engaging them, a feat accomplished by the standard loadout of wing-mounted laser cannons and tactical missiles. With the assistance of advanced targeting computers, the Maverick can safely engage enemy drones outside of effective plasma range, and onboard electronic countermeasures can take care of most missile-based attacks. Other Mavericks are equipped with a heavy loadout of fusion warheads. These Mavericks are intended to use tactical hyperspace jumps to close with enemy vessels, deploying their deadly payload right after the enemy's shields have collapsed. Some daring Maverick pilots enter the "danger zone" between a ship and its active shield, a crippling attack against any vessel, but one that comes at the cost of the Maverick and its crew should the fighter be unable to jump into hyperspace immediately after launching their attack. Like most Alliance fighter, the Maverick is equipped with one of the best energy shields the Alliance has in its possession. This shield has a quick recharge rate, which combined with the Maverick's speed, means that unless it is crippled, the Maverick can often flee from combat, charge its shield, and reenter the fray.

Mavericks can operate in space and in atmosphere, its wings being aerodynamically-sound and serving as more than a platform for weapons. The tail fins on the Maverick are variable geometry, allowing the fighter to land on runways. The Maverick can both launch vertically using its standard antigravity generators or use its impulse engines for a horizontal launch. While devastating in space, in atmosphere, the Maverick is unchallenged. Many Alliance rookie pilots train in the Maverick in combat missions against primitive alien species that have yet to achieve spaceflight. The slow atmospheric craft of these civilizations prove easy pickings for the Maverick, and give the pilots a taste of the vehicle's capabilities.
