A map I made for the Map of the Fortnight contest on AlternateHistory.com. The premise of this map is a United States divided more along ethnic lines, like the Soviet Union. It evolved into a United States divided into districts, which are culturally similar pseudo-federations that run the day-to-day governance of the country. In law and in practice, these divisions are all subservient to Federal control, having little of the autonomy that the states of the old United States had.

In this timeline, John Wilkes Booth and his conspirators succeeded in assassinating President Lincoln, Vice President Johnson and Secretary of State Seward. A period of major instability followed, as Reconstruction turned into a guerrilla war which only ended in the 1880s. The unstable United States suffered from an aborted communist revolution and another attempt by the South to secede in 1911, and what rose from the ashes was the Union of American Federal Republics: a nation forged by an alliance of conservative and moderate Northern factions and the military. It was decided that the old state model be scrapped for a "federation of federations," whereby the regions of the United States are managed by "districts," on behalf of a supreme Federal government.

Ethnic minorities, such as blacks and Native Americans, were given their own "ethnic autonomous republics," as the new government believes that racial harmony is impossible and the only way to protect blacks and Native Americans is by stuffing them into nominally independent "republics" that are often impoverished. Whites are not allowed into these republics without government passes, and on the flip side blacks and Native Americans are not allowed outside of their republics without passes. Most of these republics are poor, and their natural resources are considered Federal property.

Although nominally a democracy, with a President that is elected by electors from the districts, the true power in the American Federation lies with the Chairman of the National Union Party. Current political issues that face the American Federation are the continued military occupation of the South, which is suffering from conflicts between Southerners and Northern immigrants and the continued actions of the terrorist New Confederate Army and the ongoing "Shadow War" with the Sino-Russian Axis.

I am always intrigued by one of your concept maps.  But as for this one, you fail, once more, to consider the geography and rely on political boundaries too much.
The idea of black nations set up, much like the South African attempt, is viable, however a few points.
No Texan would have given up the Houston Ship Channel area.  A slightly smaller Wharton Texas area lying south of the Brazos River.  However, this is nitpicking since your map is far too small to show a better border, (along with other points below.)
The Federals would retain Vicksburg and Natchez as necessary points to control the Mississippi River.  These would be enclaves in New Africa.
District 4 should include the Tennessee river in Alabama as a continuous  area. Alabama is given West Florida as compensation.
The Cajun area should be pushed farther north to almost the Red River east of Alexandria Louisiana.
District 5 should be split, east of the Mississippi to District 3.  The rest moved upward to include Missouri south of that River, execept for the metropolitan area of Kansas City.
There has never been a valid reason for the panhandle of Oklahoma thus it goes to Texas. As does the Pecos valley of New Mexico.
Northeast Oklahoma's lead mines and oil fields around Tulsa would be retained by the Heartland District.
The Northwest District must be moved to include the entire Snake River area of Idaho as it feeds into the Columbia river.
Montana, Colorado, Wyoming and the Black Hills of S.D. are your Rocky Mountain District.
Nevada is carved up between California and Utah.
Add Native Districts in Southern Arizona and New Mexico, the Cherokee Nation in North Carolina, and a Seminole Native Area set in the Florida.
As for the idea of "the old state model is scrapped" then New Jersey is cut in half between Pennsylvania and New York.
Wilmington Delaware goes to Pennsylvania as does Wheeling.  Rest of Delaware goes to Maryland.
Northern Michigan goes to Wisconsin.
West Virginia becomes a separate coal economic area adding the coal regions of eastern Kentucky.
Thus to keep navigation of the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers in one state, Tennessee will have to merge into Kentucky.
Rhode Island is split between Massachusetts and Connecticut which combines with New York south of Schenectady along the Hudson River.
Upper New York is split off and gains Vermont while New Hampshire and Maine are combined.
These are suggestions, not criticisms.

RE: Northern Michigan and Wisconsin:
No... if anything, Wisconsin should be split up and the northern reaches joined with the UP to form a state of Superior. IRL, there's a cultural dividing line between the northern (Minnesota-affiliated) and central/southern (Milwaukee-and-therefore-Chicago-affiliated) parts of the state, and even in-timeline, that division had already been seeded by the Civil War era, with the northern portions being distinctively more of a Scandinavian-German hybrid (comparable to Minnesota and the Finnish-majority parts of the U.P.) than southern Wisconsin's uber-German-ness. You can even see it today in sports: the Packers have unified the state with respect to football, but the northern-Packer-fans consider the Vikings to be our main rivals, whereas the southern-Packer-fans consider the Bears to be our main rivals; which means folks from northern Wisconsin crowd the Packer-Vikings games, while folks from southern Wisconsin crowd the Packer-Bears games (if you've ever wondered how Green Bay could pull off having an NFL team even back when LA couldn't, this is part of why, they're taking a double-dipping from the world's-biggest-rivals gravy boat).

If you were to draw a line roughly from La Crosse to L'Anse, combining Nordic (and presumably Ojibwe) peoples into a State of Superior (which would go to Heartland primarily due to affinity for Minnesota and its other Ojibwe tribes), and I could see the rest of Upper Michigan going to Wisconsin, but not as drawn... frankly, there'd already have to be some major in-universe explanation for why the entirety of modern St. Paul would be within Wisconsin territory.

very sound reasoning, thanks, especially about the modern football rivalries.

I said this before, but the back ARs are nerfed to all hell. Why is that? If it's 1910 when this revolution happens, large portions of Dixie would be plurality or majority black.

I said this earlier, but New Afrika is really nerfed (the southern parts of Arkansas and eastern parts of Louisiana are very black, and of course this map:

The black ARs are nerfed, because they basically act like South African bantustans: keeping blacks segregated and powerless in the name of their protection and autonomy.

Nice stream with Jim, by the way.

Hmm, that sucks. What happens to the blacks outside of the ARs but still in Dixie? You can't crowd that many people into a small place. Are they basically engaged in low-grade ethnic strife with the white population nearby, with federal forces unable to help? Are the black ARs helping them with weapons, etc?

Also, cool. So many people noticed that stream with Metokur :)

A friend of mine said basically practice (speaking), get a better mic, etc and set up a channel. Seems like a good idea, even with the inevitable "get shitloads of insults on the net" part.

Blacks outside the ARs live in segregated ghettos, and if they are fortunate are protected by Federal troops. The ARs do not have their own weapons industry, so they are not being aided with weapons.

Yeah, the stuttering was pretty bad. You should get some practice.

Im surprised the Feds didnt just lop off Appalachia (Nickajack etc) as they were largely loyal and whatnot.

And yeah gotta do better next time. Its interesting (not surprising really) how several ppl on forums etc recognized its me. Doesnt help that I use the same avatar and username everywhere and am apparently very noticeable even on 8chan when fully anon, lol.

1. What is the main ethnicity of tha Cajun AR? Franco-americans?
2. What is the government structure like here? Do districts function the same way as states from the old union? In what way are the "autonomous republics" autonomous?
3. What kind of economy does the UAFR employ? Socialism? State capitalism? Keynesianism?  Liberal capitalism?

1. Yep, otherwise known as "Cajuns."
2. No, they're organs of the Federal government. The autonomous republics are all but independent, except for the obvious things like defense and foreign affairs. And of course, they are taxed by the Federal government.
3. Keynesianism.

So how does the power structure here work? Is the President like also the Chairman of the National Union Party?

What is the economy of the UAFR like? Is it under a lot of governmental control or is it lasseiz-faire or what?

Is the standard of living poor?

It would be awesome if the USA could adopt the Swiss confederal system. Each state would have its own official language(s) and its own constitution. It works perfectly in Switzerland since the German, French and Italian-speakers get along well. They work together and the country is a success.

Intresting map/government , but should there be a Latino/Hispanic A.R. in the Southwest? How about a Jewish A.R. in the Northeast & a Muslim A.R. in the Midwest?

Immigration patterns were very different in this world, and so there aren't sizable Latino, Jewish or Muslim populations in the United States.

AFAIK, the Jews came in a decent amount. I guess the immigration stopped after 1871 (OTL strikes)?

Those places were largely from the Mexican cession. Said Hispanics left for Mexico after the Mexican-American War, and stayed there.

The New Mexican Spanish population (as in the hispanics who live in what is not new mexico) stayed there in OTL (i.e. before your POD). Do they leave after that? They're legally white, and I believe socially white as well.

The Hispanics aren't really an issue, so they're considered white if they look white.

The UAFR does not have Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the USVI or Guam, so this America is smaller than the OTL United States.

The UAFR has no interest in expanding its borders to include Canada or Mexico.

Because this America's history has had far more ethnic tensions than ours, and so Americans as a whole have decided that allowing these people to largely govern themselves saves them from a lot of conflicts.
