The Soviet Partitions

Description

Another QuantumBranching, this one of The Soviet Partitions, an entry of his I've actually wanted to cover for a while now. Basically, Hitler never came to power in 1933, Stalin was assassinated by Beria, and instead of WWII we get a Eurasian War against the Soviet Union. After the war, Germany became the dominant power in Europe, eventually forming TTL's European Union around itself. There was a limited Cold War, but not as intense as OTL's, between Japan and the Western powers in Africa. The Japanese backed independence movements in Africa And Asia[1], and the West (led by the United States) backed anti-Japanese movements in Asia. Eventually, the Japanese Empire collapsed after a failed military coup against a reformist leader, which exacerbated the decay of the Japanese Empire and led to a lot of independence movements getting what they wanted. By 2011, the United States is the world's only superpower, one that has strong ties to the great powers of Europe.

Other notes:
  • Russia went through a fascist phase from 1964 to 2003, where it basically cut itself off from the outside world. The fascist government was overthrown in a bloody revolution that saw the Fascist Party's leaders executed on public television. The Second Russian Republic is friendly to the West, mostly because the revolutionary leaders idolized the West during the days of fascism, but relations are souring since Russian democracy is still not up to Western standards, and people accused of collaborating with the fascist government have a bad habit of disappearing and occasionally reappearing in several pieces at the bottom of a canal. Then there's the fact that the revolutionary leaders of Russia have become tremendously rich and have seized a lot of state-owned enterprises, and are buddy-buddy with known organized crime lords. The Russians promise to clean up, but only if the West gives them the aid they need to rebuild.
  • Italy was a fascist state until Mussolini's death in the late 1960s. The Fascist Party got into a succession crisis, until the King of Italy restored democracy. The Fascists are still around as a fringe party, as people still remember their excesses, and Italy is now one of the leftier democracies in Europe.
  • India was Japan's greatest ally from the start, as the Asia for the Asians rhetoric rang better with the Indians without the bloodshed of the OTL Japanese war of expansion. They remain pro-Japanese, although they have been warming up to tbe West recently.
  • The Chinese are about as rich as OTL, but that wealth is more evenly spread. The Chinese are still skeptical of the Japanese, and relations are a bit bitter since some Japanese still believe Formosa was rightfully conquered. However, without the Second Sino-Japanese War of OTL, relations are a bit better.
  • South Africa is an apartheid pariah that was staunchly pro-Western, until the end of the Cold War and growing pressure in the West led to a major break, and now they're trying to patch things up with former geopolitical enemy Japan. Friendship ended with USA, now Japan is my best friend.
  • The Turks are leading their own bloc, one that promotes secularism and modernization in the Islamic world. They have some opposition in the Shia world, which is promoted by Iran, but Islamic fundamentalism isn't really a thing outside of Chechnya. Egypt and Saudi Arabia are rather rich countries in the Turkish bloc, with the Saudis richer than Turkey itself.
[1] Japanese aid was instrumental to Vietnamese independence from France, which was the big moment which showed that the Japanese and the West are no longer friends despite cooperating in the Eurasian War.
