The Proud Tower by RvBOMally The Proud Tower by RvBOMally
Here's that 19th century = 21st century world I suggested a while back. I took some of ideas suggested by El Yanqui on AH.com.

---

The fall of the Soviet Union was thought to be the end of communism, but that was not to be. The Chinese Communist Party stood the test of time. Socialism gradually became accepted in the United States, which had triumphed over the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War. Even the Soviet Union itself returned, after the fall of the Russian Federation, and again after the fall of the restored Russian Empire. The new Union of Soviet Slavic Republics makes no pretense of being a cosmopolitan society, adopting a form of "nationalist socialism" as their guiding light. The Ukrainian crisis was finally resolved by dividing the Ukrainian state into two neutral countries - Ukraine and Novorossiya. Each would go on to become very rich in the asteroid mining business, and even gain puppet governments on Earth.

Meanwhile, America ruled the waves, and eventually the stars. The United States was the pioneer of Moon colonization, Mars colonization, and the mining of the Asteroid Belt. The first combat spacecraft were American. Taking advantage of animosity with China in Southeast Asia, the Americans helped establish the Federation of South East Asian Nations, an alternative to the Chinese-dominated ASEAN. After a while, the FSEAN became a true federation, but one practically controlled by Washington. Politically, America became more and more socialist over the decades, eventually even grudgingly accepting the Russian Revolution as legitimate to an extent. The Democrats were eventually eclipsed by the Labor Party, while the Republicans of the late 21st century were even further left than the Democrats of the early 21st century.

China remained an autocracy under the iron fist of the Communist Party; token reforms, in the form of "free elections," were passed in 2080, but the Communist Party still wins every election by a surprisingly large margin. The Chinese lost the "Great Game" against the Americans, eventually losing the confrontation over the South China Sea and the stars, but now the two great rivals are starting to set aside their differences.

The EU centralized, but not after a series of crises that saw much of Eastern Europe breaking away to form their own alliance and, eventually, federation. The East saw the West as too unwilling to preserve Christian Europe, while the West saw the East as backwards bigots. With American influence in Europe waning, and the threat of the Russians, the EU turned more towards China, adopting both their economic and political system. Even the Nordic countries broke away from the EU, forming their own political union which turned against Third World immigration and defined itself as a Nordic state.

The Visegrad Pact, which grew in size and strength as a counter to the EU, was at first close to Russia and more of a loose alliance that was dominated by Poland and the EU. However, a series of wars in the Balkans, the EU and against Russia solidified the Visegrad Pact into the modern Visegrad Union. This state quickly became the dominant force in Europe, eclipsing the old EU and even becoming a greater military power than the Soviet Union. Visegrad also began its own space militarization program, sending up dozens of orbital kill satellites and establishing laser batteries on the Moon. This threatened American interests in the region, which desired a divided Europe and American dominance in the stars, not one dominated from Warsaw. When the Visegrad Union formed the Triple Alliance with the EU and the Nordic Federation, the Americans formed an alliance with their old enemies - China and Russia - to form the Great Troika.

India never did eclipse China or the United States, or even Russia, and now it is the sick man of Earth. Plagued with corruption, a weak military, and revolutionaries within government who want to reform India along socialist lines, India is now becoming a target for Chinese interests. The Indian government is hoping that their agreements - both public and secret - with the Visegrad Union will benefit them, without violating their neutrality.

As the Middle Eastern conflicts petered out, Iran became the dominant power. After a violent civil war against its Arab subjects, Iran gradually became the unchallenged powerhouse of the Middle East and the shining light of the Islamic world. Shia supremacy and the more egregious theocratic laws eventually became things of the past, and Iran became a more secular state and society, but it still clings on to its roots and identity as an Islamic republic. Recently, the Iranians have been expanding their influence in Africa, competing with the other great powers who have taken an interest in that continent's resources and market potential for decades.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea opened up to the world, upon the urging of Iran, in the mid-21st century. After economic reforms, which saw the country adopting new automated technologies at a rapid pace, the DPRK became the economic powerhouse of Asia. Soon, it led the charge in reunifying the Korean peninsula, which was welcomed by the South Koreans, as by this point the DPRK had reformed significantly and was a cosmopolitan, democratic society not unlike the south. However, the Koreans nonetheless maintained their strong military, which proved essential to defeating China in the Sino-Korean War of 2080.

Throughout the 21st century, political instability led to the fall of many South American governments, impoverishing the continent and forcing it to rely on the great powers for aid. Today, the states of South America could be hardly considered sovereign, as foreign political and corporate interests dominate their affairs. This has caused some concern among some within the great powers, but the powers that be assure them that this is all for the benefit of South America itself. Africa, on the other hand, has seen a tremendous rise, thanks in large part to foreign investment. The Sahel Union and Ethiopia are powerful economies, although still dwarfed by those of the great powers. The North African Union, a Russian project, has successfully taken advantage of the Suez Canal and its tourism industry after the chaos of the early 21st century.

Space, at least the inner Solar System, is steadily being conquered. Over a thousand people now live on the Moon, and there is a permanent settlement on Mars. The Chinese and American flags have waved in Venus' statosphere from the hands of human explorers, if only for a few seconds. Probes have found primitive bacteria on Europa, but the jury is still out on whether that is the result of contamination from past, failed missions. However, faster-than-light still remains a pipe dream, even though bogus articles claiming reactionless drives or warp drives or something else have been "proven" to work are still copied by lazy journalists.

Now the world is at the brink of another world war, between the Triple Alliance and the Great Troika. The leaders of the Visegrad Union believe that they have the technology to take Moscow quickly, before Chinese forces can mobilize and attack them from orbit, while keeping the Americans from wanting to fight in a Eurasian war. To that end, they're willing to back the European Union, which has just lost the President of the European Commission to Islamists in Algeria, even as the EU blames the Chinese for orchestrating the attack from behind the scenes….

Frankly, the year that parallels 1914 should have been 2140, not 2089. Thus, 2015 would parallel 1789 (the actual year of the French Revolution) and it would've been much, much easier to write alternates of alternates regarding the *Napoleon analogue.

I think you should update Proud Tower? Why? Because there needs to be an analogue for Luxembourg. Like Moldova, for example.

How would an official from this world's US and an official from Hugbox's EF go along?

Frankly, this depends on the former official's skin color.

If the former official is white and straight, then EF official will shame him for being privileged cis scum. Of course, if the EF official is white, he will say that, then whisper "Heh, just joking. Those politically correct morons in EF like that. That's how I'm still ruling"

Meanwhile, in that future's Polandball comic...
Iran: "I declare WAR ON TERROR!" -runs after a random Buddhist state, wearing sunglasses- "PURSIA!"
USA: "Heh. Remember when he used to call me the Great Satan?"
North Korea: "Best Korea remember. Yuo remember I use to be Juche dictatorship?"
USA: "Yeah, I remember that too. Also, do you remember that Novorossiya used to be a filthy Dixie flag-stealing rogue state?"

I just love this world. In the future, North Korea is a democratic society, Iran is basically the next USA (ironically), while European Union is pretty much going to collapse (because it's Austria-Hungary) and Poland is going to elect a Polish Hitler who was born in whatever is the analogue of Austria (inside Austria-Hungary, of course) here. Perhaps Croatia?

India is the Ottoman Empire. If so, what is the analogue of the poor Armenians here?

The Sikhs, with the Dravidians (and Bengalis) as the Arabs. And sorry to break your heart, but Croatia, due to a "restored" Yugoslavia being Poland, is going to be targetted by Polish *Hitler, who is from Mittleeuropa (the Austria analogue).

I actually disagree with using giant robots. They're simply impractical and pale in comparison to tanks. Pakistan is kinda like California.
