The PoD is the United States Constitution not being adopted because of conflicts over slavery. The new United States breaks up soon after that after a war with the British sees New England secede. To add insult to injury, the United States suffers another civil war in the 1840s which sees the slave states secede to form the Confederate States of America (same name, different entity). This slaveocracy adopts Manifest Destiny, but after a disastrous war against Mexico it decides to expand southward instead, building up strength. By the dawn of the 20th century, Central America, most of the Caribbean that isn't British and even Venezuela are under Confederate control, with its puppets extending further south to secure the entire South American continent. A depression in the 1920s sees the rise of the Freedom Party, a genocidal totalitarian political party which seeks to eradicate non-whites from the Confederacy's territory.

Meanwhile, in the Old World, Napoleon Bonaparte manages to force a peace on the British after a few more battles goes his way. His Continental System does break down outside of Western Europe, and the Austro-Russian alliance rises to challenge Napoleon's successors. The British shrink back into isolation, content with their global empire and not caring much for the wars slowly tearing Europe apart. By the 1860s, the new Germany arises out of Prussia, leaving out Austria-Hungary. A rather devastating world war, which even brings in the British and Confederates, at the dawn of the 20th century sees the German-Russian-Italian alliance crushed. This has rather nasty effects, seeing the rise of the communist Eurasian People's Republic in Russia and extreme racist totalitarian nationalism in Germany and Italy. The Fatherland Party of Germany seeks to unite the German people under Berlin and to dominate Europe, all the while eradicating what it sees as the problem for Germany: the Jews. It has invaded French-aligned Poland and creates the extermination camp to deal with the country's Jews, a model that will be emulated worldwide. Meanwhile, the newly militarized Japan starts to make claims on China, and a war between the Eurasians and the Japanese sees all of China go red. A failed communist revolution in Britain sees the civilian government thrown out by a group of reactionary military officers calling itself Norsefire.

The twentieth century sees parts of the old Ottoman, British and French empires collapse. One particularly worrying development is the divisions that arose in the Middle East and Africa. Tired of being manipulated, three states arose to become great powers in their own right. In the Middle East, the pro-Eurasian government of Persia was overthrown by students and radical clerics, seeing the rise of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Similarly, Egypt, which had been all but independent for most of the twentieth century, became the home of a form of radical Arab nationalism, partially inspired by Eurasian communism. This movement succeeds in overthrowing the Ottoman authorities in Egypt and spreads throughout the Middle East and North Africa, and even carves out the Republic of Iraq in the Mesopotamian territories of the Ottoman Empire. In Southern Africa, a group of Confederate-supplied white supremacists centered in the former colony of Drakia manages to take control. With the goal of enslaving the entire African continent, the Domination of the Draka has already taken southern Africa up to the former French colony of the Congo, and is challenging the Egyptians for dominance of the continent.

By the 21st century, the world under various jackboots and is at the brink of war. The French have established a revived Cult of the Supreme Being, the Supreme Being seen in the figure of Napoleon Bonaparte and his descendants. The monarchists in Austria and their Norsefire allies in Britain demand constant veneration of their God-given kings. The Germans have refined state and race worship into an art. The Eurasians crush all dissent in the name of the people, and they have started to adopt a form of leader veneration as the French have. The Japanese, too, have turned their Shinto traditions into outright emperor-worship, even though the emperor himself has no power. In Iran, anything deemed unholy or heretical can cost a man his hands, his tongue, or his head. In the Confederacy and the Domination, even having the wrong skin color can get one enslaved or killed. Throughout the world, security cameras are around every streetcorner, microphones in every room, and legions of armed police wait to take down anybody who questions the system. On the international scale, several competing alliance systems exist, and these systems align with one another if it is convenient. The nuclear arsenals of the great powers number in the tens of thousands for each power, and targeting systems are updated monthly, as alliances shift about that often. The great powers fight proxy wars throughout the borders of the empires, sending immense amounts of lead and gold to groups which are willing to pay lip service to their system. It is only a matter of time before this house of cards collapses on itself, and when that day comes, there will only be chaos.
