Another mirror WWII flipping the Allied and Axis powers (the original is here). This time, the flips are between Japan and the United States, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, and Fascist Italy and the United Kingdom. Many thanks to people in the dA suggestions forum who gave me ideas.
The PoD is actually the CSA winning the American Civil War and leading to the creation of an American empire under the Lincoln dynasty. Meanwhile, the Meiji Restoration goes a bit differently thanks to French intervention, and Japan becomes a constitutional, democratic republic under the French model. A series of humiliating losses during the Indian Wars[1] leads to the further centralization of power in America, and the rise in militarism that crushes the last remnants of American liberal democracy. During the turn of the 20th century, Japan and America both expand. The Great War[2] distracts the European powers as China undergoes a violent republican revolution. The Japanese assist Chinese republicans during their revolution, but they seize Manchuria and Korea after liberating it from Russian troops[3]. The Republic of China ends up being a de facto vassal of the Japanese, so they accede to Japan's expansion. Because of increasing liberalism in Japan's government, the Japanese form the East Asian Federation, although initially the federation only had Japanese voters. Franchise is expanded throughout thr 1920s and 1930s. In America, the American Empire invades and conquers the Confederacy. A nascent redemocratization movement in the 1920s is crushed by a military coup in the 1930s.
Meanwhile, communist revolution puts an end to the war in Europe, succeeding in the West but being crushed in the East. Neutral Italy ends up being the de facto master of the Mediterranean, as they garner the support of counterrevolutionary French forces and gain much of the former French and German colonial empires. The United Kingdom survives the war, but feels humiliated, particularly as they had to give up Egypt and India. Britain becomes a Unionist[4] state. The post-war Russian Republic[5] does not last, being replaced by the National Bolshevist[6] regime. The British, Russians and Americans end up forming the Allied Powers, an alliance committed to overturning the table maintained by the Rome-Tokyo Axis. The UEWR, a totalitarian communist dictatorship, has joined the Axis after the Russian invasion of Germany.
