It is the year 2239 and the world is experiencing the greatest political upheaval since the Great War in the 1940s. The German Empire, one of the three superpowers for nearly three centuries, is quickly decaying. The communist movement throughout the world, bolstered by anti-German and anti-American sentiment, ascends. Elsewhere in the Sol System, the hotly contested world of Chthon mysteriously disappears and causes suspicion of a new superweapon in the works.

The dawn of the 2240s is not the finest hour for the German Reich. For over two centuries the proud and mighty empire was considered one of the three superpowers of Earth. During six decades in the 2100s it was the most powerful of the three, its will supreme over the decaying American Empire and the rotten Soviet Union.

But that time has passed. Over the centuries, Germany's government grew more and more dependent on its Kaiser, eventually becoming an autocratic monarchy by the dawn of the 23rd century. The current Kaiser, Heinrich IV, is a paranoid man who sees enemies everywhere. Her colonies have torn themselves from her and, unable to compete with her rivals' resource dominance, Germany's power weakened. To the west, Germany's longtime ally France has fractured after a socialist-instigated civil war. The American Empire has consumed the Low Countries. To the south, the Italian Empire begins to separate from Germany's Mitteleuropa and begins making moves to usurp Germany's position as the premier European power. In space, her colonies grow restless as the government grows increasingly unable to supply far-flung worlds and fight off alien incursions.

But those problems pale in comparison to the threat from the north and east. Communist revolutions have consumed Scandinavia and Germany's old eastern puppets as the Soviet Union ascends. The Baltic states, Poland and Czechia, Hungary and Rumania fall to the red menace like dominoes. Most importantly, communist activity within Germany's borders has increased, and the Soviets have boasted that they will assist a revolution should it come to pass....

Although Imperial control has declined since its zenith in the 21st century. Fortress America is stronger than ever. Massive fleets patrol the Atlantic and Pacific, destroying any unauthorized vessel foolish enough to sail into America's waters. North America has been thoroughly Americanized for centuries, although some of the southern territories still possess sizable Spanish-speaking communities. A few mass executions during the 20th century have made the Canadians exemplary subjects, and by the 2230s the Canadian identity is largely for the history books.

South America's Americanization process is nearly complete. Although resistance was stiff after the American conquest of her puppets in the 1950s and 1960s, the local population has learned the folly of resistance over generations of planned starvation, mass executions and bombing campaigns. Now, only the territories of Patagonia and Argentina have yet to be fully developed and Americanized. The Americans have plans to deport the remaining natives to their interstellar colonies.

East Asia has settled down ever since the Chinese foolishly tried to assert their power over the Soviet Union in the 2100s. A coup and a civil war later and China is a shadow of its former glory, allowing the Americans to sneak back into Tibet and Korea.

As China declined, India ascended. About a century after it liberated the "American Raj" it was wracked with ethnic and political conflict and rivalry with neighboring Islamic Union, no doubt fostered by the superpowers. It has lost some territory to Islamic Union in the Kashmir War of 2138 and the wounds of that conflict still resonate with many Indians, ironically putting them in the same camp as their old American foes.

The Middle East, for most of its history a Soviet playground, has had large chunks of it absorbed into the Soviet Union proper. Such is the price of the failed Islamic revolution that originated in Iran. A few ethnic cleansing campaigns and redrawing of borders over the course of several decades have taught the formerly independent-minded people the wisdom of accepting Russian-style socialism into every facet of their lives. The only areas outside of Soviet control, direct or indirect, are the American possessions and puppets in Arabia and German-aligned Israel.

Africa is an astonishing example of old colonies managing to gain their independence one way or another. Many colonies have changed hands in the years since the Great War, but most of the independence movements on the continent are recent. Some, such as Egypt, Sudan and Ostafrika managed to overthrow their masters through violent revolution (with copious Soviet assistance, of course). Others, such as former German Equatorial Africa, gained their independence because their colonial masters found it too expensive to keep direct rule. Drained of all useful resources, filled with disease and used as a dumping ground for hazardous waste for centuries, the colonial powers instead replaced their colonies with governments that are only nominally independent. Italy has purchased some colonies from the Germans and Americans, both of which have more pressing concerns elsewhere in the world.

Africa is the least stable continent on the planet, filled to the brim with rebel movements, pirates and warlords. Foreign powers normally turn these violent groups against their rivals as part of their global competition. South Africa is one of the few success stories on the continent, separating peacefully from the American Empire and becoming a pro-American power player on the continent.

Indonesia, having overthrown its American colonizers in the 21st century, is now a powerful socialist rival to the American-aligned Australian Republic. Both states look at each other with mutual suspicion and hostility, ready to destroy one another if their masters desire.
